On Cityness

Cityness refers to a city as a thing in the making. A city is not just a functional space with buildings, people, and services, but a dynamic, responsive, ever-changing environment that constantly senses the actions of its inhabitants and controls their ways of interacting with the city. This art installation aims to capture and explore this process to question our subjectivity and agency within the city. By building a preliminary cybernetic system, the installation invites the audience to be part of its inhabitants and a factor being passively incorporated into the city's data. The system's appearance is composed of customized printed circuit boards, and the mist on the outermost wall represents the city's response to the co-relationship between the environment and the inhabitants.

Cityness 指向一种“生成中的城市”状态。城市并不只是由建筑、人口与公共服务构成的功能性空间，它更是一个持续变化、具有反馈机制的动态环境。它不断感知居民的行动，同时也在无形中塑造、调节人们与城市发生关系的方式。这个装置试图捕捉并呈现这一过程，借此追问个体在城市系统中的主体性与能动性。
作品通过搭建一个初步的控制论系统，将观众纳入装置的运行逻辑之中。观众既是“城市居民”的化身，也是被动进入城市数据系统的变量之一；他们的存在、行为与环境变化共同参与系统的反馈循环。通过这种机制，装置将城市理解为一个并非静止的空间结构，而是一个由环境、基础设施与人的活动共同生成的关系网络。
在形式上，装置的主体由定制印刷电路板构成，以电子系统的可见结构回应城市背后的技术逻辑与信息网络。最外层墙面上的雾气则象征城市对环境与居民之间相互关系的回应——它既像一种感知后的输出，也像城市呼吸、扩散与调节自身状态的外部表征。通过这一具象化的反馈过程，作品试图让观众重新感知自己在城市中的位置，以及我们如何在看似日常的城市运行机制中不断被记录、吸纳与塑造。
